Charges against Azharul, 149 others accepted in case under explosive act

A Dhaka tribunal today took cognisance of charges against ATM Azharul Islam, an assistant secretary general of Jamaat-e-Islami, and 149 others in a case filed under Explosive Substances Act.

Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of the Special Tribunal-1 of Dhaka passed the order after scrutinising case dockets and other documents.

The tribunal issued arrest warrants against 14 accused as they were shown fugitives in the charge sheet.

The tribunal also directed the officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station to submit the report on execution of arrest warrantsby January 20, 2021.

During today's hearing, Azharul was produced before the tribunal.

On December 30, 2014, International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Azharul to death for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War.

According to the prosecution, it was alleged that a group of Jamaat leaders and activists led by Azharul brought out a procession in front of Kakrail Super Market and vandalized cars, blasted bombs on duty policemen and prevented them from discharging their duties on September 19, 2011.A number of policemen were injured following the bomb blasts, the case statement added.

Later,acase was filed with Ramna Police Station.

After an investigation, Sub-Inspector Mohammad Saiful lslam Khan of Detective Branch of police, also investigation officer of the case, on August 22 last year submitted a charge sheet to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court of Dhaka.
