Titumir college: Protesters withdraw Gulshan-1 blockade

Students of Government Titumir College withdrew their blockade from the Gulshan-1 intersection after nearly one hour.

Around 7:30pm, they withdrew the blockade considering public suffering and started demonstrating in front of the college campus, reports our correspondent from the spot.

Speaking at a rally around 8:00pm, Mahmudul Hasan, a student of the Political Science Department, said their one-point demand is that the government declare the college an independent university.

"We will not accept the formation of a university for all seven colleges, including Titumir," he said, adding that students will resume their protest programme tomorrow as scheduled.

Earlier around 6:40pm, the current and former students of the college blocked the intersection as they resumed their protest in the capital's Mohakhali for the third consecutive day.

The blockade halted traffic movement through the key intersection for nearly one hour causing traffic congestion on all roads leading to it.

Yesterday, the protesters issued an ultimatum demanding that Titumir college be declared a university by 4:00pm today. They also threatened to block roads or railways in Dhaka North indefinitely under a programme titled "Barasat Barricade to North City".

Around 4:30pm today, several hundred students brought out a procession from the campus and marched towards the Mohakhali rail gate area blocking both sides of the Mohakhali-Gulshan road.

Around 6:15pm, they headed towards the Gulshan-1 intersection with a procession.

Talking to reporters today, the students also threatened to announce tougher movements unless their demands are met.

The student also said they would strongly resist any attempt to politicise their issue.
