Major reshuffle in JnU registrar’s office without VC’s consent

Acting registrar defends move as 'internal redistribution' of duties

A major reshuffle has taken place at the registrar's office of Jagannath University (JnU), where 24 officials were reassigned without the permission of the vice-chancellor and the treasurer (currently serving as acting VC).

According to an office order signed on September 22 by acting registrar Prof Md Sheikh Gias Uddin, the changes were made effective immediately.

JnU Vice-Chancellor Prof Rezaul Karim left the country on September 18 for a trip abroad. Shortly after his departure, the registrar's office issued the order, sources said.

Several senior officials, requesting anonymity, said, "As soon as the VC went on leave, the registrar hurriedly issued the order. He has no such authority."

When contacted, JnU's legal officer Advocate Ranjan Kumar Das said, "Neither the university law nor the constitution provides such authority to the registrar."

In response to the allegations, acting registrar Gias Uddin said, "This is not a transfer but an internal redistribution of duties. For this, the VC's approval is not required."

He, however, admitted that the university law or constitution does not explicitly mention such authority.

Treasurer Prof Sabina Sharmin, who is currently carrying out the routine duties of the VC, said, "I have heard about it. The VC is on leave, and I am not aware whether he gave any order regarding this."

When contacted, VC Prof Rezaul Karim said, "I was not aware of this. It has come to my notice, and discussions are ongoing. A rational solution will be found, In sha Allah. I don't know why the registrar took such a step."
