Who is the new governor of Bangladesh Bank?
The government today appointed Md Mostaqur Rahman, a garment entrepreneur by profession, as the governor of the central bank for the next four years, replacing ousted governor Ahsan H Mansur.
Rahman, the managing director of Fatullah-based sweater company Hera Sweaters Ltd, was born in 1966.
Rahman is a cost and management accountant (CMA), having qualified from the Institute of Cost & Management Accountants of Bangladesh (ICMAB) in 1992.
The new governor also holds a B.Com (Hons.) and a Master’s degree from the Department of Accounting, University of Dhaka.
As a garment manufacturer, Rahman is also a member of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
He was a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s central election steering committee, formed to operate during the national polls on February 12.
Rahman is also a member of the Real Estate and Housing Association of Bangladesh (REHAB), the Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (ATAB), and the Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI), and has served on various important committees.
He has worked closely with regulators, including Bangladesh Bank and Chittagong Stock Exchange Ltd, and served as chairman of the BGMEA’s standing committee on Bangladesh Bank.
Businesses expect the new governor will understand the challenges they face every day, as he is also a businessman.
Some of the previous governors used to listen to the challenges of the business community but could not take practical action, perhaps due to a lack of understanding of the magnitude of those challenges, the businessperson also said.
Mostaqur Rahman is an entrepreneur and businessman, and a senior financial governance specialist with over 30 years of leadership experience in corporate finance, export economics, institutional governance, and financial systems management.
He has demonstrated expertise in financial oversight, regulatory compliance, banking-sector engagement, and capital management.
He has visited the United Kingdom, Singapore, China, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal.
