Bangladesh recorded 707 deaths in workplace accidents in 2024, with transport workers suffering the highest number of deaths, according to a report by the Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS).

Besides, 229 workers were tortured in their workplaces last year, with 113 of ending up dead.

Based on an analysis of newspaper reports from January 1 to December 15 of last year, the report revealed that 273 transport workers lost their lives during the year.

The agriculture sector accounted for 102 deaths, the second highest, followed by the construction, rickshaw, and migrant worker sectors.

Among the deceased, 705 were men, while only two were women.

The report identified road accidents, roof collapses, electrocution, fires, cylinder explosions, and lightning strikes as the leading causes of workplace deaths.

Over the past decade, more than 8,000 workers have died in workplace accidents, the report highlighted.

The highest number of deaths occurred in 2019, with 1,200 deaths, followed by 2021 with 1,053 deaths.
