Inflation eased slightly in December but remained over 10 percent for the second month, straining the wallets of fixed and low income people.

Data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) shows that the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures changes in prices of a basket of goods and services, declined to 10.89 percent in December from 11.38 percent in November. 

The decline was attributed to stable food prices following the arrival of winter vegetables.

Food inflation dropped to 12.92 percent in December, down from 13.80 percent in November. 

Also, non-food inflation edged down to 9.26 percent in December, compared to 9.39 percent the previous month.

Bangladesh has been grappling with persistent inflation for more than two years despite several measures taken by the authorities. 

The annual average inflation rose to 10.22 percent in November from 10.05 percent a month ago, according to the Bangladesh Bank.
