Importers and hundreds of clearing and forwarding (C&F) agents converged on the Dhaka airport cargo zone, seeking answers a day after a devastating fire gutted a cargo village.

Many gathered in front of the burnt-out complex, lamenting the massive losses from the blaze, which took seven hours to bring under control.

"We had imported goods worth Tk 200 crore," said Belal Hossain of Jane Trading Ltd, a C&F agent specialising in imports for the garments sector and various foreign investors, highlighting the financial toll of the incident.

Despite the initial suspension of export activities amid the fire, operations have since resumed.

Mohammad Mansur, general secretary of the Bangladesh Fruits and Vegetables Exporters' Association, confirmed that he was able to airship his consignment to Kuwait after a delay of about six hours.

A top official of Sadhan's Custom House said exports were hampered owing to safety issues with aircraft.

Exports are on, we are considering facilitating import activities temporarily today through a new cargo terminal, the official said.

He also said a committee has been formed to assess losses, and they expect an approximate assessment tomorrow.
