Giant Textiles Ltd in Gazipur has announced indefinite closure, citing protests and violations of the Bangladesh Labour Act.

A notice was posted with the announcement outside the factory gate in Baniarchala area of Gazipur Sadar today.

Speaking to The Daily Star, factory Admin Manager Sohel Rana said the closure was declared under Section 13(1) of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006.

"All activities will remain suspended until further notice," he said.

According to the notice, on September 27, workers allegedly disrupted operations by locking the gates of the dyeing section, bonded warehouse, and the main entrance. When senior officials, including Sohel, attempted to address the situation, they were reportedly assaulted.

"When a favourable environment for opening the factory is created, it will be communicated through a notice," the notice read.

Efforts by factory management and local administration to mediate failed, leading to further deterioration of the factory's working environment.

Authorities initially declared a general holiday, but as tensions persisted, the administration ordered the evacuation of the factory premises.

The notice described the workers' actions as "tantamount to an illegal strike under labour law", prompting the shutdown to "ensure the safety of staff and protection of property".

Worker Al Hadi claimed he was removed from the factory over a card-punch dispute, triggering protests. "When others asked for an explanation from the authorities, they were beaten by the men belonging to the factory authorities," he said.

Labour leaders Jalal Hawlader and Mahfuzul Islam of the Garments and Sweater Workers Trade Union Centre alleged the workers were physically assaulted and female workers harassed by factory personnel.

They demanded the immediate reopening of the factory and to ensure that those involved in such acts are held accountable.

Gazipur Industrial Police Inspector Abdul Latif confirmed that he was present at the scene during the protests yesterday and said the closure was aimed at safeguarding factory assets.
