Amirul Haque becomes new president of Ctg chamber

Seacom Group Chairman Mohammed Amirul Haque has been elected the new president of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) for the 2025-2027 term.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Amzad Hossain, managing director of Rising Group, and Mohammad Moshiul Alam (Swapan), vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Shipping Agents Association, have been elected senior vice-president and vice-president, respectively.

The three presidium members were elected unanimously by the newly elected 24 directors at the first meeting of the executive body, held at the World Trade Centre in Chattogram yesterday, according to a press release issued by the Chittagong Chamber.

Earlier on Saturday, in the biennial election of the trade body, 18 directors from the United Business Forum panel were elected by general voters from two categories: the Ordinary Member Group and the Associate Member Group.

The remaining six director candidates from the Town Association and Trade Group were also from the United Business Forum panel, including Mohammad Amirul, and were elected uncontested.

Mohammed Amirul previously served as a director of both the Chittagong Chamber and the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI).

He is the chairman of Seacom Group of Industries and managing director of Premier Cement. He also serves as president of the LPG Operators Association of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Cement Manufacturers Association.

Two panels participated in this year’s election of the port city’s chamber: the Amirul Haque-led United Business Forum and the SM Nurul Haque-led Sammilito Byaboshayee Parishad.

In addition, 16 independent candidates contested in the Ordinary and Associate groups.

Earlier, on May 22 -- a day before the election -- Sammilito Byaboshayee Parishad boycotted the polls, alleging that the process was illegal.

A total of 1,843 out of 4,001 voters in the Ordinary Group cast their votes, while 882 out of 2,764 voters participated in the Associate Group.
