MFC in Bangladesh concerned by 'intimidation of journos'
The Media Freedom Coalition in Bangladesh said it was concerned by the recent reports of "violence against and intimidation of journalists".
In a statement issued today and signed by 12 members of the coalition, MFC in Bangladesh pointed out recent instances including the detention of a Prothom Alo journalist and, urged authorities to investigate the instances impartially.
"We, the undersigned members of the Media Freedom Coalition (MFC) in Bangladesh, are concerned about recent reports of violence against and intimidation of journalists, including violence directed at reporters covering the Supreme Court elections, an assault on the brother of a London-based journalist for Al Jazeera, the attack of a Dhaka Tribune photojournalist, and the recent reported detention of a Prothom Alo journalist. We urge the authorities to investigate each of these instances promptly and impartially," the statement said.
The 12 members who signed the statement are: Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US.
Meanwhile, European Union in Bangladesh shared a Prothom Alo article on Facebook about the Committee to Protect Journalists seeking unconditional release of the Bangla daily's reporter Samsuzzaman Shams, who was arrested from his Savar home early yesterday.
In a post on their verified Facebook page, the European Union in Bangladesh said "arrests of, and criminal proceedings against, journalists in any country warrant particular scrutiny and attention".
