Two AL men killed in attack by rival group
Two men were killed and five others injured a faction of local Awami League unleashed an attack on the supporters of a rival faction of the same party in Raipura upazila of Narsingdi yesterday morning.
The dead are Iqbal Hossain, 32, son of Kawnia Miah of Baluchar village and Amanullah Miah, 31, son of Saikat Miah of Mirzachar village of the upazila.
Mozaffar Hossain, officer-in-charge (operation) of Raipura Police Station, told The Daily Star that a tension was on the rise between the supporters of newly elected Chairman and AL leader Jafar Iqbal Manik and his rival Farukul Islam, former chairman of the union and a ruling party leader.
The supporters of the two groups had engaged in several sporadic clashes in recent times, the OC said.
On yesterday morning, supporters of Farukul launched a premeditated attack on the supporters Manik with firearms, leaving seven people critically injured, Mozaffar added.
The injured were taken to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital where duty doctors pronounced Iqbal and Amanullah dead.
Three of them, who suffered bullet injuries, were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
“Additional police forces have been deployed in the char area following the incident,” the OC added.
