One dead, 3 missing after 2 speedboats overturn

A youth was killed and three children went missing in the Jamuna as two speedboats overturned after colliding head-on near Aricha ghat in Manikganj's Shivalaya yesterday.

The victim is Iqbal Hossain, 42, of Pabna's Santhia upazila.

Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Shivalaya Police Station, said the accident happened when a speedboat with passengers heading for Pabna's Kazirhat crashed head-on with an empty one coming from the opposite direction around 4:30pm.

On information, police rushed to the spot and recovered Iqbal's body, he said, adding that three children went missing.

Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority sources said over 50 speedboats are plying Aricha-Kazirhat route illegally.
