Bangladesh slips in press freedom ranking: WEF
Bangladesh’s position has deteriorated in this year’s freedom of the press ranking done by the World Economic Forum (WEF).
The WEF prepared this year’s Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) based on 141 economies.
Bangladesh’s position slipped down four places to 123rd in the latest GCI from 119th in last year’s GCI.
“Both score and ranking of Bangladesh in press freedom has declined this year,” said Khondaker Golam Moazzem, director of Centre for Policy Research, who unveiled the Bangladesh section of the GCI 2019 on behalf of the WEF.
The GCI 2019 showed that Norway continued to be the best performer in terms of press freedom for the second consecutive year.
Norway scored 92.2 on a zero to 100 scale in press freedom ranking in this year’s GCI. In the scale, a score of 100 represents the optimal situation or frontier.
Bangladesh scored 49.3 in the freedom of the press this year, according to the GCI 2019.
