College girl 'kills herself'

A college girl allegedly killed herself on Friday night for what seems to be her parents' inability to bear her educational expenses, including her HSC registration fees.

For over a week, the girl had been threatening her parents that she would commit suicide if they did not give her the money she wanted, said her family members and neighbours.

“She fought with us that night after we told her that we would not be able to pay Tk 28,900 in the morning. She said she'd kill herself, but we didn't take her threat seriously,” her mother Shima Begum told The Daily Star.

She said her daughter was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her room at their rented house in Mirpur around 10:00pm. The girl was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced her dead around 11:30pm.

Saturday was the last day for HSC registration in her college, claimed Shima.

The victim's father is an employee at a garment factory and her mother a housewife.

Dadan Fakir, officer-in-charge of Pallabi Police Station, said an investigation was going on.
