I have been writing since my college days …Fatema Tuz Zohra on writing

Ekushey Padak Awardee Fatema Tuz Zohra is a renowned Nazrul exponent whose versatile career has put her on the television screen in a few plays, as well as a writer on numerous columns. This year's Boi Mela has observed the launching of her publication, titled “Geet O Shurer Bhinno Urmimalaye: Nazrul Sangeet,” published by Onindo Prokash. In a recent conversation, the singer shares details about her book, as well as her identity as a writer.

What is your book about and what inspired you to write it?

Fatema Tuz Zohra:This book is for those who love Nazrul's compositions and would like to be more informed. There are many interpretations regarding any topic, and that is what makes the subject richer. At the same time, I have tried to highlight the neglect towards preserving his legacy, and how he is slipping away from the consciousness of people. I have tried to encapsulate my feelings on that, and have also written about his songs from my analytical perspective. A poet who was born in an era dominated by Tagore, he was recognised as an artiste beyond that fold. This concept is where the title, “Geet O Shurer Bhinno Urmimalaye” comes from.

When did you first conceive the idea for your book? How long did the writing process take?

Fatema Tuz Zohra:There is a regular column in the paper “Shobdoghor” where I have been writing for over two years now. The book is a compilation of my writings there.

How long have you been writing? Could you tell us about your other publications?

Fatema Tuz Zohra:This is my sixth publication. I have written a book of poems which was published in 1992. After that I published a book which were a compilation of essays and columns that I have written in other places. I have written two books on short rhymes, and a novel based on the Liberation War. I have been writing since my college days. When I was young, I loved writing poetry, and that is how my writing career began. Gradually I began to expand into other areas, but I have a special preference for critical or analytical writing.

What is your ideal working space as a writer?

Fatema Tuz Zohra:I prefer writing at night. I also don't like working at a desk, and prefer low surfaces with a slightly higher one to write on.

Who are your favourite authors?

Fatema Tuz Zohra:I love satire. Syed Mujtaba Ali and Sanjib Chattopadhyay are my favourite writers.
