NURJAHAN BEGUM REMEMBERED

Documentary screening and discussion held

A documentary on pioneering journalist Nurjahan Begum's life and her magazine “Begum” was screened on her 91st birth anniversary at Bashundhara City's Star Cineplex, on June 5. The film, titled “Nurjahan Begum – Itihaaser Kingbadanti Nari,” has been made by her granddaughter Priota Iftekhar. The documentary features an interview with the pioneering journalist as well as shots of her family and home. 

Nurjahan Begum, one of the senior-most woman editors of the subcontinent, passed away this year on May 23. 

The event was anchored by eminent cultural personality Sara Zaker, along with several prominent guest speakers including former advisor to the caretaker government Rasheda K Chowdhury, Nurjahan Begum's daughter Rina Yasmin, journalist Dil Monowara Monu, Bangladesh Television's news anchor Kabi Nasir Ahmed, Adcom's managing director Nazim Farhan Chowdhury, television drama director Chayanika Chowdhury, Channel i's Programme Manager and TV producer Raju Alim. Channel i was the event's media and broadcasting partner.

Speakers at the event demanded that a chair be placed at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism in her honour, and a major road or avenue be named after her. 

Priota, Nurjahan Begum's granddaughter and the maker of the documentary, said “I would like to build my beloved grandmother's image and make her name known worldwide.”
