Elon Musk's Tesla diner reportedly near completion

Elon Musk's long-awaited Tesla Diner & Drive-In is finally taking shape at the former Shakey's Pizza site on Hollywood's Santa Monica Boulevard, though an opening date remains uncertain, according to a recent report by The New York Times.
First announced by Musk in 2018, the futuristic two-level complex—designed by architecture firm Stantec—will combine a 24-hour restaurant, dual movie screens, and EV charging stations.
The project has faced delays since its inception, with permits filed in 2021 and approved in 2023. Recent construction footage shared by a former Tesla designer shows progress, but the main structure has yet to rise. Job postings for a "dining experience specialist" suggest Tesla is ramping up hiring, with responsibilities spanning AV operations and facility management.
The diner's development coincides with growing backlash against Musk's political influence as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Protests targeting Tesla dealerships—including vandalism and arson—have spiked, with California Tesla Model 3 sales dropping 36% last month. The controversy spilled into LA's culinary scene after chefs Walter and Margarita Manzke expressed interest in collaborating, prompting criticism on social media.
While Musk initially hinted at a location near the 405 freeway, the project eventually landed at the Hollywood site after Shakey's lease was terminated. The CEO's vision includes in-car menu displays when vehicles park. With construction ongoing but details scarce, the diner remains a symbol of Musk's ambitious—and divisive—blend of tech and lifestyle ventures.
