Apple launches iPhone 17

Apple has unveiled the iPhone 17, introducing a series of hardware upgrades and design refinements while keeping the familiar look of its predecessor. The new device was announced on September 9 at the company's headquarters in California.
Camera upgrades with "Center Stage" selfie lens
A key focus of the iPhone 17 is its camera system. Rear cameras are 48 megapixels, including a Fusion Main camera with optical-quality 2x telephoto and a new Fusion Ultra Wide lens designed for expansive scenes and macro photography.

On the front, Apple has introduced "Center Stage", a square-shaped selfie camera with an 18 MP sensor. As shown in the Apple event, the technology widens the field of view, adapts to group shots and enables ultra-stabilised video in 4K HDR. The feature also supports "dual capture", allowing users to film simultaneously with the front and back cameras.
A larger and brighter display
The iPhone 17 is equipped with a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display featuring ProMotion technology, which adjusts the refresh rate up to 120Hz for smoother scrolling and improved gaming performance.
Apple claims the new Ceramic Shield 2 makes the front cover three times more scratch-resistant than the previous generation, with reduced glare and greater brightness outdoors.
Performance boost with the A19 chip
At the core of the device is Apple's new A19 processor, built on a three-nanometre process. The company says the chip delivers faster performance and greater efficiency, boosting gaming graphics and powering new artificial intelligence features.
A redesigned power management system promises up to 30 hours of video playback, while fast-charging capabilities allow the battery to reach 50 percent capacity in around 20 minutes when used with Apple's new 40W charger, as per Apple.

The iPhone 17 also debuts a new networking chip, the N1, which supports Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread connectivity for smart home devices.
eSIM expansion
Apple is continuing its shift away from physical SIM cards. An eSIM-only iPhone 17 model will be available in Bahrain, Canada, Guam, Japan, Kuwait, Mexico, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, the U.S., and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to Apple.
Apple says the digital format is more secure and easier to use when travelling, with support from more than 500 carriers worldwide.
iOS 26 and new AI features
The iPhone 17 ships with iOS 26, which introduces new enhanced capabilities of Apple Intelligence, a set of generative AI tools designed to enhance messaging, search and translation.

According to Apple, the system runs largely on-device to preserve privacy, though some features may require cloud access. Other updates include redesigned apps, smarter notifications and new tools in CarPlay, Music and Wallet.
Environmental commitments
Alongside the phone, Apple has introduced a range of accessories, including a silicone case in multiple colours and a crossbody strap made from recycled yarns.
The company also mentioned its pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030, noting that the iPhone 17 contains 85 percent recycled aluminium and 100 percent recycled cobalt in its battery.
Pricing and availability
The iPhone 17 will be offered in two storage capacities, 256 GB and 512 GB, with prices starting at $799 in the United States.
Colour options include lavender, mist blue, sage, white and black. Pre-orders begin on September 12, with the device available from September 19 in over 60 countries.
