Tk 58cr stuck in payment gateways as government efforts stall
The website of Evaly, a controversial Bangladeshi e-commerce platform, appeared to have been compromised on 24 May, with a message allegedly left by a hacker claiming possession of the platform’s customer data and demanding contact from company staff.
A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced Evaly’s founding chief executive officer Mohammad Rassel, and his wife Shamima Nasrin, former chairperson of the e-commerce platform, to two years’ imprisonment in a case filed over the embezzlement of Tk 14.10 lakh from a customer.
Some 100 Evaly customers will get back their money on January 30, said AHM Shafiquzzaman, director general of the Directorate of National Consumers Right Protection (DNCRP), today.
A Dhaka court today issued arrest warrants against Mohammad Rassel, the former chief executive officer of the controversial e-commerce platform Evaly, and his wife Shamima Nasrin, also a co-founder, in a cheque bounce case.
The directorate serves show-cause notice on the e-commerce platform
Mohammad Rassel, former CEO of the online marketplace Evaly, was granted bail and released from Kashimpur prison on Monday afternoon. This comes over a year after his arrest alongside his wife, Shamima Nasrin, amid allegations of severe financial misconduct.
As many as 19,623 complaints against 50 e-commerce companies involving about Tk 600 crore filed with the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) are pending, leaving the customers in a state of limbo over their money.
It is concerning that celebrities and public figures have continued to be involved in such devious projects, without anyone holding them accountable.

The commerce ministry recently issued a letter to Evaly, seeking the exact number of its aggrieved customers and merchants as well as the amount of money stuck-up in payment gateways in order to facilitate refunds.
