Why Norway remain Brazil’s unsolved puzzle

Following the group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026, five-time champions Brazil have already cleared the first hurdle in their Mission Hexa with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Japan in Houston, but the Round of 16 now brings a statistical quirk that sits uncomfortably with their global status: a head-to-head record that belongs entirely to their next opponents, Norway.

The Scandinavians arrive in the last 16 in confident mood after a composed 2-1 win over Ivory Coast, courtesy of a late winner from Erling Haaland. They finished Group I as runners-up behind France, ahead of African heavyweights Senegal.

For Brazil fans, though, the real talking point is not just Norway’s form. It is history.

Because across four meetings, Brazil have never beaten them. It is one of those rare records that feels slightly out of place when attached to the most successful team in World Cup history.

The story began in 1988 in Oslo, a 1-1 draw that did not raise too many eyebrows at the time but quietly set the tone for a fixture Brazil never really managed to take control of. Nearly a decade later, in 1997 -- again a friendly -- Norway made a far louder statement, running out 4-2 winners at Ullevaal Stadium -- a result that still feels eye-catching even by modern standards.

Then came the one everyone remembers.

At the 1998 World Cup in France, a star-studded Brazil -- featuring Ronaldo Nazario, Bebeto, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos and Cafu -- led through Bebeto and looked comfortably on course. But Norway flipped the script through Tore Andre Flo and Kjetil Rekdal, turning it into a 2-1 win.

Even though Brazil still topped the group, that night stuck in the memory.

The most recent meeting came in 2006, a fairly low-key 1-1 friendly, which more or less closed the book on a fixture that has always felt slightly out of sync with Brazil’s rhythm.

On paper, Carlo Ancelotti’s side will still start as favourites, but can they finally crack the Norway code in fifth attempt?
