Tashriq wins silver medal in Commonwealth Chess
Tashriq Saihan Shan won the silver medal in the U-20 category of the Open section at the Commonwealth Chess Championship, following a decisive victory over Indian GM Shyaam Nikhi in the ninth and final round held recently in Malaysia.
Tashriq scored six points from nine matches, finishing third in the U-20 group. However, he was eventually awarded the silver medal after the group's top finisher, Indian FM Adireddy Arjun—who finished runner-up in the overall Open section—relinquished the U-20 gold award. As a result, Tashriq was promoted to the U-20 runner-up position.
"In the Commonwealth Chess Championship, U-20 players compete in the Open section, but prizes are awarded separately for the U-20 group," Bangladesh's International Arbiter Haroon Ur Rashid told The Daily Star.
On his way to the silver medal, Tashriq claimed victories against Kenya's Anges Mary, South Africa's Parenzee Ethan, Malaysia's Andika Jeraram, Malaysia's Aqilah Hosna Bintie Ainul Fikri, Sri Lanka's AFM Pitigala Chandra, and India's GM Shyaam Nikhi.
He lost to India's GM Sengupta Deep, Malaysia's Kartikeyan Rajendra, and Wong Ruo Yong.
