Mascherano sees Busquets’ retirement as ‘extra motivation’ for Inter Miami

Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano believes Sergio Busquets' retirement announcement can inspire his side to finish the season strong.

"He told me yesterday--he'd been thinking about it for the past few weeks," Mascherano revealed on Friday. "It's a shame because he's still at a level where we can continue enjoying his game. As a friend who's been through that moment, all you can do is support him and share your thoughts. Busi is completely convinced about his decision."

Miami have already secured a playoff spot, but Mascherano hopes the news fuels their MLS Cup chase.

"Hopefully, it's an extra motivation to help Busi finish his career in the best possible way. This team thrives on challenges--it's full of winners and competitors."

The Argentine coach praised his former Barcelona teammate's intelligence and hinted at a coaching future. "Busi is going to be a coach--when, how, and where will be up to him. I haven't talked to him about whether he'll return home or stay here in Miami."

Mascherano also reflected on their shared past. "I was lucky to share almost eight seasons with him. I arrived to play the same position, but always knew he was the starter. In my early days, he helped me a lot. What we experienced at Barcelona was unique and unforgettable—it left a mark on all of our careers."

Earlier on Thursday, Busquets announced on social media that he will retire after the current season.
