Brazil ended their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign with a 1-0 defeat to Bolivia in El Alto on Wednesday (Bangladesh time), finishing fifth on 28 points -- their worst ever performance in the round-robin era.

In punishing 4,150-metre altitude, Carlo Ancelotti fielded a side made up largely of reserves, and the visitors struggled for rhythm and stamina. The decisive moment came in first-half stoppage time, when Bruno Guimaraes conceded a penalty confirmed by VAR. Miguelito converted to put Bolivia ahead, scoring the first goal Brazil had conceded under Ancelotti.

Despite second-half introductions for Marquinhos, Raphinha and teenager Estevao, Brazil created little, with Alisson forced into a late save to avoid a heavier loss. The result sparked wild celebrations from Bolivia, who clinched a playoff berth for the World Cup.

Selecao recorded just eight wins in 18 games, six defeats, and conceded 17 goals. It is the first time Brazil have failed to reach 30 points since the format began in 1996.

Although qualification was secured under the expanded format, Brazil would have faced the playoffs under previous rules.
