My bowling style is not suitable for Tests: Varun Chakaravarthy

India's mystery spinner and star performer at the Champions Trophy 2025, Varun Chakaravarthy, has expressed his interest in Test cricket but admitted that his bowling style does not suit the longest format of the game.

After making a name for himself in T20Is following stellar performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), Chakaravarthy recently cemented his place in India's ODI squad.

He proved to be India's X-factor in the recently concluded Champions Trophy, playing a pivotal role in the Men in Blue's triumph. The 33-year-old bagged nine wickets in three matches, leaving batters baffled with his variations and mystery spin.

With his successful transition from T20Is to ODIs, many have speculated whether Chakaravarthy will now aim for a place in the Test squad. However, the spinner himself has ruled out that possibility due to the demands of red-ball cricket.

"I'm interested in Test cricket, but my bowling style is not suitable for Tests," Chakaravarthy stated during an interview with Tamil anchor Gobinath on the latter's YouTube channel.

He elaborated on the limitations that prevent him from thriving in the format. "With my action and bowling style, it's realistically not possible for me to bowl long spells. Because I bowl really quick, I can only bowl 10-15 overs at best. So, my bowling is not suitable for red-ball cricket. That is why I'm focusing only on 20-over and 50-over cricket," he explained.

Chakaravarthy's red-ball experience is minimal, having played just one first-class match in his career—a game for Tamil Nadu against Hyderabad in 2018. The outing did not go in his favor as he managed just one wicket while conceding 105 runs in 39 overs.

While Test cricket remains a distant dream, Chakaravarthy continues to be a potent force in limited-overs cricket. His performances in white-ball cricket have made him one of India's most valuable assets, and as the team builds toward future ICC tournaments, his role will remain crucial in India's plans.
