Narine to miss BPL following ban for illegal action

West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine has been suspended from bowling in international cricket with immediate effect following an independent assessment that found his bowling action to be illegal.

Sunil Narine, currently playing for Comilla Victorians in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), will not be able to participate in the tournament any further due to the suspension.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today confirmed the suspension of Sunil Narine in a press release, revealing that the assessment found all the variations of his deliveries to be exceeding the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations. 

“In accordance with Article 6.1 of the regulations, Narine’s international suspension will also be recognised and enforced by all National Cricket Federations within domestic cricket events played in their own jurisdiction, save that, with the consent of the West Indies Cricket Board, Narine may be able to play in domestic cricket events played under the auspices of the West Indies Cricket Board,” the release read. 

According to the release, he can apply for a re-assessment after modifying his bowling action in accordance with clause 2.4 of the Regulations for the Review of Bowlers Reported with Suspected Illegal Bowling Actions.

The test was performed on November 17 at the ICC’s accredited testing centre in Loughborough University in the UK.

Earlier, Narine was reported for suspected bowling action on November 7 after the third ODI match against Sri Lanka in Pallekele.
