Team Bangladesh secures 3 gold medals in IMDO 2023

The International Medicine and Disease Olympiad (IMDO) is a global medical and disease knowledge based problem-solving competition for high school students. IMDO recognises the best student problem solvers, who are interested in medicine, in order to boost their fascination towards this field. The competition tests the participant's knowledge in medicine-related fields of biology, including topics like molecular and cell biology, human physiology, and human diseases.

This year, team Bangladesh secured the first place globally, and won three gold and one silver medal. The winners include Naimul Islam, from Notre Dame College, Dhaka, Ture Saina Tithi, from Mulagram High School, Brahmanbaria, Mst. Samia Afrose Sruty, from Adamjee Cantonment College, Dhaka, and Md Sanaul Haque Shanto respectively.

Naimul is the first male Bangladeshi to win the gold medal and achieved the world's highest score, breaking all previous records of the Olympiad by scoring a magnificent 91 out of 100. He is an incoming freshman at Northwestern University in the US. Samia won the gold medal as the world's highest scorer (female). She recently completed her HSC and is presently a Turkiye Burslari Scholarship holder.

In order to be eligible for this competition, students from all over the world had to participate in the United States Medicine & Disease Olympiad (USMDO), which itself is another international competition. Following this competition, teams from different countries are formed based on the scores obtained. After successfully competing in the USMDO, four Bangladeshi students won gold medals and were qualified to form a team for the IMDO.

In the USMDO, Naimul secured a spot among the top 5 and obtained first position among all the international competitors. Lastly, Ture became the highest scorer (female) in both the USMDO and IMDO. She is believed to be the youngest winner in the history of IMDO.
