Leader through votes, Hasina tells BCL council
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today told leaders and activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) that leadership of the student body will be elected through direct votes of its councillors.
“The leadership of Chhatra League will be elected by the councillors through ballot box as it has been done in the past,” Hasina, the president of Awami League, said while speaking as a chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of BCL’s 28th council at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka this morning.
Councillors of the party will elect their leaders directly through votes and the democratic process in the party will continue, Hasina said.
She advised the BCL leaders and activists to pay attention to meritorious and regular students so that they can be elected as leaders.
Several thousands of BCL leaders and activists from across the country joined the two-day long ceremony at the Suhrawardy Udyan which started at 11:00am.
The BCL members from district, upazila and thana levels joined the council where new leadership were likely to be picked by the AL high command, not by voting in the 28th council, said AL and BCL sources.Among others, Syed Ashraful Islam, general secretary and public administration minister, Tofail Ahmed, commerce minister, Obaidul Quader, road transport and bridges minister and Siddiqui Nazmul Alam, BCL general secretary, spoke at the first day of the two-day long council chaired by HM Badiuzzaman Sohag, BCL president.
