BNP is taking part in the upcoming municipality polls as part of its movement for restoring democracy in the country, party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today.

“Though there is no congenial atmosphere for a free and fair election, we are participating in the electoral race as part of our movement to restore democracy,” Fakhrul said while talking to reporters at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office in Dhaka this afternoon.

Criticising the Election Commission for its biased role, the BNP leader alleged that the constitutional organisation has failed to act neutrally.

“The upcoming polls will not be held in a free, fair and impartial manner unless the EC acts impartially and creates a level playing field for all,” Fakhrul observed.

The EC’s overall role has been made questionable through its activities as it is working in favour of the ruling party’s interest, Fakhrul alleged.

The BNP leader went to the party office for the first time after he was released from Kashimpur Jail in Gazipur on bail on December 1.

On November 25, BNP announced to participate in the December 30 municipality elections.
