The government has halted the Gazipur City Corporation election sensing a defeat, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said today.

"The ruling quarter, using one of their leaders, filed a writ petition and halted Gazipur City Corporation polls," he told reporters hours after the High Court stayed the election for three months.

The government has become isolated from mass people and that has been proved through halting the election, Fakhrul said.

The BNP leader said that his party would have gained victory by a big margin if the polls had been held.

The government has been carrying out attacks on BNP men and implicating them in politically motivated cases ahead of the city corporation election, Fakhrul alleged.

The people have already taken position in favour of BNP's electoral symbol ignoring the government sponsored acts of repression, Fakhrul said.

Gazipur City Corporation election was scheduled to be held on May 15 and all its mayoral and councilor runners were electioneering in full swing before the High Court intervened today.

Azharul Islam, labour and manpower affairs secretary of ruling Awami League's Savar unit, who was elected chairman of Shimulia Union Parishad, submitted the writ petition seeking stay on the GCC election challenging legality of a recent inclusion of six mouzas of the Union Parishad.
