A Bangladeshi student died after snatchers reportedly pushed her on the subway track in New York, reports US-based Bangla newspaper Thikana.

Zinat Hossain (24), a student of Hunter College in Brooklyn, died on the spot after she was crushed under the train at local time 9:00pm on May 11.

Bangladeshis in New York are warning fellow expats through social media to be more careful while taking the subway.

The newspaper reported that New York police have not yet confirmed the identity of the snatchers. It was also not confirmed whether Zinat was a victim of hate crime. Police think the possibility is there that snatchers were trying to take Zinat's bag and at one stage she was pushed towards the subway rail track.

According to Dr Enamul Haque, president of Greater Comilla Association in New York and also maternal uncle of Zinat, the deceased hails from Daudkandi. She moved to New York with her parents Amir Hossain and Jasmine Hira. They used to live in Brooklyn.

Dr Enamul said they were yet to learn of the details of how Zinat was killed.

New York Police informed the Bangladeshi community that they were investigating into the matter. The body of Zinat will be handed over to the family after the probe.
