LGRD Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today inspected the under-construction Gandharbpur Water Treatment Plant in Rupganj and directed authorities to complete the remaining work within a year.

The plant is being developed under the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority's (DWASA) "Dhaka Environmentally Sustainable Water Supply Project", aimed at ensuring safe and sustainable water supply for Dhaka.

During the visit, the minister reviewed the project's progress and exchanged views with officials involved in its implementation. He stressed the importance of completing the remaining work on schedule to help meet Dhaka's growing water demand.

Speaking on the occasion, Fakhrul said efficient and modern water management is essential for protecting public health and the environment.

He also emphasised the need to reduce dependence on groundwater and increase the use of surface water to ensure sustainable management of the country's water resources.

"Increasing the use of surface water will help maintain environmental balance and preserve water resources for future generations," he said.

At a meeting following the inspection, Local Government Division Secretary Md Shahidul Hasan, DWASA Managing Director Md Aminul Islam, and other senior officials briefed the minister on the project's progress and future plans.

According to project officials, the first phase of the Gandharbpur Water Treatment Plant will supply 500 million litres of treated water daily to Dhaka, while the second phase is expected to add another 500 million litres per day.
