Veranda collapse injures 4 women

3-storey building collapses in Dhaka

Four women were injured as a veranda of a dilapidated three-storey building collapsed on Debendra Nath Das Road in Dhaka's Sutrapur area early yesterday.

The injured -- Lipi Begum, 35, Halima Begum, 35, Kulsum Begum, 50, and Majeda Begum, 45 -- are all from Rangpur and they are domestic workers in the city.

The veranda, rented a couple of years ago on the the second floor of the house by the four women, suddenly caved in around 3:30am, said Golam Sarowar, an officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence station in the area.

Locals rescued and took the injured to Mitford Hospital.

The caretaker of the building, Zarina Begum, 75, said house owner Ibrahim Hossain lives elsewhere.

The residents of the building have been asked to evacuate, said KM Ashraf Uddin, officer-in-charge of Sutrapur Police Station.
