Marine Drive Ultra Marathon 2020

Pahela Baishakh 2022: Pahela Baishakh is back

The first-ever 100 mile marathon in Bangladesh took place on 17-18 January, 2020 at the Marine Drive Road, Cox's Bazar. A total of 96 runners participated in this event. The marathon was listed in three categories; 50km, 100km, and 100miles.

The event was set with the aim of raising awareness on coastal pollution and healthy living. The slogan for this event was "Travel Responsibly". Travelers of Bangladesh (ToB) — a Facebook group, and Escapade — an event management firm, jointly organised this event. The course for the event was very challenging for the runners, as the two-way highway on the coastal city is always busy with vehicles rushing at full speed. Cyclists and motorcyclists working as volunteers for the event patrolled around the runners on the highway throughout the event.

The participants set out at 6:13AM on 17 January. The marathon took the runners on a scenic route from Inani Beach to Teknaf and back. The marathon went on for a total of 36 hours where the cut-off points were set at 5, 10, 16, and 24 hours. Keeping the length of Marine Drive road in mind, circuit checkpoints were placed on 25 kilometres and 50 kilometres. Among 96 participants, 10 runners took part in the 100 kilometres category and only 4 finished the course. Six runners registered for the 100 miles course and only three of them could complete it. Altogether, 75 runners successfully completed the course of 50 km, 100 km, and 100-mile category.
