Why rain and romance will always go together

Dark clouds gather in the sky, and a splatter of raindrops softly lands on windowsills, setting our mellow Bengali hearts aflutter. As we put up a kettle of tea to brew without wasting a moment, we realise that there is nothing dearer to us Bangladeshis than the rain.

Rushing outside to feel the raindrops on our faces, as children, we would dance and sing with wild ecstasy. That boundless joy of soaking in rain cleansed our souls, healing us anew.

And then in the glory days of our youth, these very same raindrops softened us. A certain someone who seemed ordinary suddenly became special when he offered his umbrella gallantly while we were both stranded in a downpour outside college.  With the invincibility of youth and first love, we surrendered ourselves to this wondrous season of heady emotions when rain brought romance with her.

And when the tender splashes of first love gently touch one’s heart and soul like the first drops of rain, life as one knew it changes entirely. Everything else pales in comparison. One wonders how one lives, talks, breathes, even, before that one special person came into life! And as the mad, magical days of rain pour her bounty on all of heaven and earth with fierce splashes and thunderstorms, one’s feelings and emotions are consumed with the thoughts of that person.

After waiting restlessly for days that stretch on like years, the blessed hour finally arrives when one is to meet her paramour, a lovely white saree, fluid and beautiful like the gentle whisper of sweet nothings from a lover, is the attire of choice.

This white saree, reminiscent of a dancing cloud at the onset of rain, is adorned with shades of pink, just like a heart aglow with hues of love. One so desperately wants her beloved to view her as a celestial creature and, in pursuit of that, chooses to let her natural self and beauty shine through, shunning unnecessary frivolities of makeup and the like.

And as his eyes rest upon her heavenly face, soft and dewy like the petals of a flower after rain, he loses his heart to her forever. Her dark, luscious locks, left to their own lascivious devices, remind her lover of the stormy nights and her lovely placid eyes, the calm after the storm.
