Dhaka jolted by early morning earthquake
An earthquake shook Dhaka and surrounding areas at 6:14am today, with tremors also reported in nearby districts.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the quake was of light intensity and occurred at 6:14:45am.
The epicenter was located in Shibpur, Narsingdi, about 38 kilometres northeast of the Meteorological Department's seismic monitoring centre in Agargaon, Dhaka.
The tremor measured 4.1 on the Richter scale, consistent with preliminary readings from the Indian Center for Seismology, while the USGS had yet to release its report.
Bangladesh faces a high risk of major earthquakes due to its location along three active tectonic plate faults, experts warned recently following major tremors, stressing that preparedness, public awareness and modern technology are crucial to reducing casualties and damage.
