Star Cineplex celebrates 19th anniversary, honours Bangladeshi films

Upon entering the Dhaka Club premises, guests were greeted by vivid movie posters beautifully displayed on the hall's exterior grounds. From Shakib Khan's 2016 film "Shikari" to Tom Holland's "Spider Man", everything took us on a nostalgic voyage through the cinematic adventure of Star Cinplex's phenomenal history. 

Yesterday, everyone gathered under one roof to commemorate the jubilant 19th anniversary of Bangladesh's first multiplex theater. Having started  its journey on October 8, 2004, Star Cineplex officials chose to host a huge celebration yesterday. 

Singer Dinat Jahan Munni gave a riveting performance at the event.

Celebrities starting from Mahfuz Ahmed, Symon Sadik, Xefer Rahman, filmmaker Dipankar Dipon, ABM Sumon, Prince Mahmud, Nirab Hossaib, Ridy Sheikh, Director Taneem Rahman Angshu, Hridi Huq, Jazz Multimedia owner Abdul Aziz, and filmmaker Mostofa Kamal Raz, amongst others. 

The celebration began with performances by singer Dinat Jahan Munni and Sabbir Zaman, who paid special homage to filmmaker Sohanoor Rahman Sohan and renowned actor and Member of Parliament, Akbar Hossain Pathan (Farooque), by performing popular songs from their superhit films. 

Mahboob Rahman Ruhel, the founder of Star Cineplex, spoke at the ceremony about the multiplex's amazing journey and how Bangladeshi films have surpassed international films this year.

"This year, we saw content like 'Shurongo,' 'Priyotoma,' and 'Prohelika,' which drew audiences to the theater. These films have gotten rave reviews at our theatres. It even surpassed some Hollywood blockbuster films that have grossed over $100 million globally. This just goes to show that the audience values good content above all else," Ruhel remarked.

Star Cineplex to screen its first Korean movie

Mahboob Rahman Ruhel also mentioned his plans to open four more Star Cineplex locations and to provide fans with all new sorts of live entertainment. 

"We intend to open more Star Cineplex locations, including one in Uttara with four large big screens, to provide audiences with a completely new cinematic experience. Cinema halls are planned for Narayanganj, Cumilla, and Cox's Bazar. Initially, we intend to expand into these four locations first, and then expand into other areas," said Star Cineplex's CEO. 

Star Cineplex gave a special crest and bouquet to Mahfuz Ahmed for his film "Prohelika."

"Live entertainment is the emerging trend in the film industry. We want to broadcast Taylor Swift's or Ed Sheeran's concerts to our audiences. We also intend to bring diverse foreign language films to our audience, beginning with Turkish and Japanese films, in order to cater to varied audiences. We currently have 19 screens and hope to have 40 screens by 2024," Mahboob Rahman Ruhel said.

Star Cineplex organised a special segment to honour films that have left an indelible imprint on people's hearts. Films such as "Antarjal," "Prohelika," and "1971 Shei Shob Din" were honoured with flowers and accolades on stage. 

The grand event concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony in which artistes and directors joined the Cineplex team on stage to end on a sweet note.

Star Cineplex is the country's first multiplex. It opened on October 8, in 2004, in Bashundhara City shopping mall. They have branches in the capital–Bashundhara City, Shimanto Shambhar, Dhanmondi, SKS Tower, Mohakhali, Sony Square, Mirpur 1, and Bangabandhu Military Museum, Bijoy Sarani. Last year, another outlet of the multiplex was opened in Chattogram's Bali Orchid. The seventh outlet of STAR Cineplex was opened in Rajshahi's Hi-Tech Park on January 13.
