New ‘Rickshaw Girl’ song released in tribute to rickshaw artists
Amitabh Reza Chowdhury's new film Rickshaw Girl is set to release on January 24 across cinemas and OTT platforms in Bangladesh. Ahead of the premiere, today the music video "Kon Lataye Urba Ghuri" (Which Spool Will Fly the Kite) was released in tribute to the vibrant rickshaw art and the artists behind it.
Penned by Sharmin Sultana Sumi and Gousul Alam Shaon, the song is performed by Sumel Chowdhury, with composition and music arranged by the band Chirkutt.
Speaking about the music video, Mohammad Asaduzzaman, the executive producer of "Rickshaw Girl", said, "Bangladeshi rickshaws stand out from those anywhere else in the world, with their colourful, imaginative artwork being a source of national pride. With this music video, we aimed to honour the urban folk tradition, the craftsmanship, and the creativity of rickshaw art. It's nearly extinct now due to the rise of digital printing, but through 'Rickshaw Girl', we hope to play a small part in preserving this beautiful heritage."
The film revolves around Naima, a young girl with an artistic soul. She loves to paint, but her life takes a turn when her father, the family's sole breadwinner, falls ill. With no other options, Naima takes to the streets, not with a paintbrush but with a rickshaw. As the plot thickens, the question becomes: how will Naima fulfil her dreams? Novera Rahman plays the role of Naima, with Champa, Momena Chowdhury, Naresh Bhuiyan, and Allen Shubhro in supporting roles.
Rickshaw Girl is based on the novel of the same name by Mitali Perkins. Director Amitabh Reza Chowdhury has skillfully blended the dreamlike world of rickshaw art with Naima's creative spirit, crafting a narrative that connects art to the harsh realities of life.
Amitabh Reza Chowdhury said, "Although the film is adapted from the novel by American author Mitali Perkins, 'Rickshaw Girl' is rooted in the cultural backdrop of Bangladesh. The film showcases our unique rickshaw painting as a form of art to audiences worldwide. I hope it inspires young artists in Bangladesh, especially teenagers, who have a passion for painting."
