Emon reflects on career, craft and ‘Moynar Char’
Actor Mamunun Hasan Emon has been a familiar face in Bangladesh's entertainment industry for nearly two decades. Starting out as a model, he gradually established himself as a leading actor in Dhallywood, earning both popular acclaim and critical recognition.
Emon made his film debut with "Daruchini Dwip", directed by Toukir Ahmed. His performance in "Gohine Shobdo" earned praise both at home and abroad, while "Lal Tip" further cemented his popularity with audiences. Over the years, he has received multiple Meril Prothom Alo Awards, including Best Film Actor, as well as a Critics' Award for the web film "Maya".
In January, Emon is set to return to theatres with a new film, "Moynar Char". Speaking to The Daily Star recently, he discussed the upcoming release, his career, and his views on OTT platforms.
Asked about reports of a new release, Emon confirmed the news. "You heard right. A new film titled 'Moynar Char' is releasing in January. It's a completely new story and a new character. I have never acted in a story like this before, and audiences have not seen me in such a role on the big screen," he said.
According to the actor, the film demanded significant effort from the entire team. "The director worked with great care. Viewers will be able to watch a well-crafted story in theatres. We are hoping for a January 16 release," he added.
Emon said "Moynar Char" came with several challenges. "We shot in a very remote char area in Ramgati upazila of Lakshmipur. There was no electricity. The story revolves around the struggles of people living in char regions," he explained.
Shooting in winter conditions was particularly demanding. "Filming in intense cold, both day and night, was extremely challenging. But we continued out of love for cinema. Audiences will see me in a very different character named Kashem," he said.
When asked whether he prefers being known as an actor or a model, Emon said acting remains closest to his heart. "I love acting and I love cinema. I have done many films, and audiences primarily recognise me as a film actor. But I have also been modelling since the beginning of my career and continue to do so. Modelling has given me a separate identity, but I prefer being known as an artist—especially as a film actor," he said.
Reflecting on his achievements, Emon said audience appreciation remains the most meaningful reward. "My first achievement is the love of the people. Beyond that, I have received several awards," he noted.
He cited his Meril Prothom Alo Awards for film acting and modelling, as well as the international journey of "Gohine Shobdo", which received acclaim and awards abroad. "Daruchini Dwip" won a record number of National Film Awards, while "Padmapatar Jol" received a Bachsas Award for Best Film.
He also mentioned "Jonakir Alo", which travelled to the Oscars and several major international film festivals, and "Porobashini", Bangladesh's first science fiction film, for which he received wide appreciation.
Asked about his fondest memories, Emon said they are inseparable from his audience. "As a film actor, I have countless sweet memories with viewers. Audiences are the ones who keep an artist alive. Wherever I go, at home or abroad, people show me love as a film actor. These memories are endless," he said.
On the question of which actress he felt most comfortable working with, Emon declined to single out any one name. "I respect, like and care for everyone I have worked with. I cannot choose one person. Everyone is very dear to me," he said.
He mentioned working with Bidya Sinha Mim, Kusum Sikder—alongside whom he acted in "Lal Tip", a film that resonated strongly with audiences—as well as Apu Biswas and several others.
Emon said he views OTT platforms positively. "There is a lot of good work happening there. I received a strong response for my role in the web film 'Maya'. People are appreciating the character," he said.
Winning the Meril Prothom Alo Award in the Critics' category for "Maya" was particularly meaningful, he added. "That recognition means a lot to me. I believe audiences are engaging with OTT content, and it has opened up new possibilities for actors."
