'Dune: Part Two' release postponed to 2024, alongside other films
The eagerly anticipated sequel, "Dune: Part Two," has encountered a delay in its release date, pushing it to 2024. The continuation of the story of Paul Atreides, portrayed by Timothée Chalamet, is now set to hit screens on March 15 of the same year.
Warner Bros, in collaboration with Legendary Entertainment, co-produced "Dune: Part Two." The decision to shift the release date was announced by Warner Bros.
Following a previous exclusive report by Variety that indicated the possibility of the sci-fi tentpole being slated for a 2024 release. The agreement to modify the release date involved both Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. Film Group.
This adjustment also led to the rescheduling of another highly anticipated film. "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire," originally set for a March 14 release, has been moved to April 12. This film, part of the Monsterverse franchise, is co-produced by Legendary and Warner Bros.
The decision to delay "Dune: Part Two" coincides with the ongoing strikes by the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA). The SAG-AFTRA strike's implications include actors refraining from participating in promotional activities for films affected by the strike, thus affecting the promotional plans for the star-studded cast of "Dune."
Industry insiders suggest that the release date shift is not likely to significantly impact IMAX or other film releases scheduled for the same period, such as "The Equalizer 3," "Wonka," and "The Marvels."
Among the ensemble cast of "Dune: Part Two" are renowned names like Zendaya, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Dave Bautista, Christopher Walken, and Lea Seydoux, among others.
Sony Pictures, another major studio, has also faced date changes for its films due to the ongoing strikes. "Dune: Part Two" is not the only project involving Zendaya that has been delayed; MGM's "Challengers," a tennis drama starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O'Connor, has also been rescheduled for the upcoming year.
