DiCaprio regrets not observing Martin Scorsese more closely behind the camera
Actor Leonardo DiCaprio has said that if he had one regret from his long-running collaboration with filmmaker Martin Scorsese, it would be not spending more time observing how the veteran director works behind the camera.
Speaking at the A Year in TIME event on December 10, DiCaprio reflected on more than two decades of working with Scorsese across six feature films, with a seventh currently in development. While the actor has previously stated that he has no ambition to direct films himself, he said he wished he had paid closer attention to Scorsese's directing process.
"One of the only things I could say I would regret about our relationship, if anything, is that I've been so focused on what I've been doing as an actor," DiCaprio said during a conversation with Scorsese. He added that while his attention was always on understanding his characters and their emotional depth, he would have liked to watch Scorsese's work behind the scenes more closely.
Scorsese, in response, said he often develops shots and works through scripts on his own, and praised DiCaprio's performances in their films. He described the actor's work as producing results that "at times feel almost impossible".
DiCaprio and Scorsese first collaborated on "Gangs of New York" in 2002, beginning one of the most enduring actor-director partnerships in contemporary cinema. Their most recent project together was "Killers of the Flower Moon" (2023), which received 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
The pair also confirmed that preparations are under way for their seventh film together, though details remain undisclosed. According to them, filming is expected to begin in February.
