Bangladeshi film ‘Shekor’ to premiere in Toronto
Filmmaker Proshoon Rahmaan's latest feature film, "Shekor" (The Roots), is set to have its world premiere on October 18 at the International Film Festival of South Asia (IFFSA), Toronto. The prestigious festival, which celebrates South Asian cinema, will run from October 9 to 19.
Alongside Proshoon Rahmaan, the event will also feature Indian filmmaker Anup Singh, actress Tilottama Shome, and Afghan director Roya Sadat. In addition to film screenings, the festival will host film forums and panel discussions, and this year will pay special tribute to legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt on his birth centenary.
For all latest news, follow The Daily Star's Google News channel. "Shekor" marks Rahman's fifth feature film, following "Sutopar Thikana", "Jonmobhumi", "Dhaka Dream", and "Priyo Satyajit". Known for his interest in stories of migration, displacement, identity, and self-discovery, Rahman began production on "Shekor" in May last year, completing it in June this year. The Toronto premiere will be the film's first public screening.
Exploring themes of migration and the quest for self-identity, "Shekor" delves into the universal human longing for one's roots—a connection that transcends language and borders. It tells the timeless story of the bond between people and their homeland, and the emotional journey of those who, despite being separated from their birthplace, strive to reconnect with their origins and with the loved ones they left behind.
"Life often pulls us away from our roots, yet we find ourselves searching again for that earthy scent of the soil where we were born—where we first opened our eyes, and where we first felt the touch of love. "Shekor" is a heartfelt reflection on the pull of that homeland we leave behind, and our attempt to look back once more."
The film stars FS Nayeem, Aisha Khan, Dilara Zaman, and Somu Chowdhury, among others. It was filmed in various locations across Dhaka, Gazipur, Rajshahi, and Kushtia.
The film's cinematography was handled by Sahil Rony, with art direction by Tarek Bablu, editing by Mahfuzul Haque Ashiq, and music composed by Rokon Emon. Based on a novel by expatriate writer Sanaual Mostafa, the screenplay, direction, and production of "Shekor" were undertaken by the director himself under his banner, Imation Creator.
The film is expected to be released in cinemas across Bangladesh during the upcoming Eid.
