Luca Guadagnino is bringing a fresh take on Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel "American Psycho" to the silver screen.

As reported by Variety, Hollywood star Austin Butler has been cast in the iconic and chilling role of Patrick Bateman.

The upcoming film will not be a remake of the 2000 adaptation, which featured Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, but rather a fresh interpretation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel. Directed by Luca Guadagnino, renowned for "Call Me by Your Name," "Challengers," and "Queer," this version is expected to emphasise a stronger erotic element compared to the original horror satire. With a screenplay by Scott Z. Burns, the project promises to present a new perspective on the iconic story.

Before Austin Butler was cast as Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino's "American Psycho," rumours suggested that Jacob Elordi was being considered for the role. However, for unknown reasons, Elordi did not land the part. Interestingly, Austin and Jacob share a unique connection—they have both portrayed Elvis Presley in films, with Butler starring in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis" and Elordi taking on the role in Sofia Coppola's "Priscilla."

"American Psycho," featuring Christian Bale, was released in 2000. The film tells the story of Patrick Bateman, a wealthy investment banker in 1980s New York City, who leads a double life as a Wall Street yuppie and a serial killer. While Austin Butler is set to portray Bateman in the upcoming adaptation, reports suggest that Guadagnino may offer a much different interpretation of the character compared to the previous portrayal.

Luca Guadagnino has recently completed filming "After the Hunt," a thriller starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. The film, written by Nira Garret, also features Ayo Edebiri, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Chloë Sevigny in prominent roles. Meanwhile, Austin Butler's most recent appearance was in the American war drama miniseries "Masters of the Air,' created by John Shiban and John Orloff for Apple TV+. He also had a role in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune 2."
