Singer-songwriter Ahmed Hasan Sunny, who gained popularity with songs such as “Shohorer Duita Gaan”, “Manush Keno Erokom” and “Amra Hoyto”, has made his debut as a filmmaker. Yesterday (January 16), Sunny released his first feature film, “Ekhane Rajnoitik Alap Joruri” (Political discussion is necessary), in cinemas.

The film, which challenges the long-standing social taboo implied by the phrase “Ekhane Rajnoitik Alap Nishedh” (political discussion prohibited), has been released at five outlets of STAR Cineplex. According to the director, the movie is currently screening at the Bashundhara, Shimanto Shambhar (Dhanmondi), Sony Square (Mirpur), Center Point (Uttara), and Bali Arcade (Chattogram) branches, with a total of 14 shows running daily.

Explaining the reason behind the film’s title, Sunny said a large segment of the younger generation has grown up distancing itself from politics. “An entire generation has been raised with the mindset of ‘I hate politics’, which is why many are unfamiliar with the country’s history. Without properly understanding the past, it is difficult to move forward. That is why political discussion is necessary—we must know our history,” he said.

Although the film is inspired by the July 2024 student–public uprising, Sunny noted that it also reflects different phases of Bangladesh’s historical and political journey.

The lead role is played by Imtiaz Barshon. The cast also includes Azad Abul Kalam, Tanvir Apurba, A K Azad Shetu and Keya Alam. The story and screenplay were written by Khalid Mahbub Turjo.
With this release, Ahmed Hasan Sunny steps into cinema as a director, presenting a film that aims to provoke dialogue on politics, history and collective responsibility.
