Noted theatre personality Syed Jamil Ahmed has announced his resignation as Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, citing 'bureaucratic challenges' and 'restrictions on artistic expression'.

The incident took place at the closing ceremony of the "Munier Chowdhury Prothom Jatiya Natyautsav" (Munier Chowdhury First National Theatre Festival) organised by the Training Department of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, where Jamil Ahmed was present as the chief guest.

During the event, the theatre personality who was supposed to give a speech to the present audience, suddenly took the microphone and informed on his resignation. "It is no longer possible for me to continue working here. That is why I am submitting my resignation letter to the Shilpakala Secretary (Mohammad Wares Hossain) in front of all of you," he stated, addressing the audience and distinguished guests at the event.

The eminent theatre personality expressed his desire to return to his roots in theatre, saying, "If we must repeatedly call upon the authorities and still fail to establish a collaborative and peaceful working environment due to bureaucratic obstacles, I do not see how I can effectively fulfill my role here. I have given this decision a great deal of thought."

He further voiced his concerns over restrictions on cultural expression, particularly the prohibition of the term "Adivasi" (Indigenous communities). "We were told that we cannot even utter the word 'Adivasi.' As I step down today, my heartfelt wish is that the Adivasi people receive their rightful recognition, that all forms of oppression against them cease, and that they can live with the same rights and dignity as every other citizen of this country."

Ahmed concluded with a broader call for social justice, stating, "I dream of a Bangladesh free from discrimination, a nation that upholds the ideals for which our martyrs sacrificed their lives. We are losing sight of the spirit of the recent July movement, and I sincerely hope that Shilpakala Academy will work toward realizing that vision in the future."

However, on the same stage the Secretary of Shilpakala Academy Mohammad Wares Hossain said he does not have the authority to accept the resignation; that responsibility lies with the Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Md. Mofidur Rahman, the acting Secretary of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs, told Prothom Alo that while he has heard about the resignation, he has yet to receive the official letter. He stated that he would comment further once the letter reaches him.

After receiving the resignation letter, Mohammad Wares Hossain, Secretary of Shilpakala Academy, addressed the audience from the stage, clarifying, "As the Secretary of Shilpakala, I have merely received the letter in hand. However, no official or employee of the academy has formally accepted this resignation."
