UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has donated 220 housing units to BRAC to assist the vulnerable people affected by the monsoon rain and flood in Ukhiya and Teknaf of Cox's Bazar.

The housing units will support more than 1,100 people who have been either displaced or at risk due to the ongoing monsoon rains and flood.

This comes just a week after UNHCR donated 3,550 family tents to the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society to support relief efforts for Bangladeshi families nationwide.

It is estimated that up to four million people have been affected by flood in Bangladesh, with hundreds of thousands displaced across the country.

"The people of Bangladesh, particularly in Ukhiya and Teknaf, have shown incredible solidarity to the Rohingya refugees since the onset of the crisis in 2017," said Marin Din Kajdomcaj, UNHCR's head of operations and sub-office in Cox's Bazar.

"Today, we are extending our hand of support the people in these areas. Monsoon floods and destruction make no distinction, refugees and local people are affected alike. We hope that this donation can contribute to alleviate the sufferings of the most vulnerable families in the area," he added.

Cox's Bazar Deputy Commissioner Kamal Hossain, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Ashraful Afsar, Additional Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner Mohammed Shamsuddouza and BRAC Head of Humanitarian Crisis Management Mohammed Abdus Salam, among others, were present at the event.
