Traffic woes on Dhaka-Ctg highway reduced
Authorities have successfully cut down on the tailback that has been plaguing the Dhaka-Chittagong highway for the last five days and reached a length of 114 kilometres yesterday.
Now, the tailback is persisting on two points – reducing to about 10 kilometres in Feni Sadar and about 12 more in Daudkandi, Comilla, from what our district correspondents report.
From Chittagong, vehicles were plying smoothly towards Dhaka until Lemuabazar, Feni Sadar, our staff correspondent reports. The tailback started from there.
Md Rubel, a driver carrying container from Chittagong port who was stuck in Lemuabazar, told The Daily Star he found the highway mostly free from the port city this morning.
In Feni, where the construction of an overpass in Fatehpur caused the tailback to grow out of control, authorities toiled overnight to cut it down. Now, the tailback is persisting for about 10 kilometres from Md Ali Bazar to Lalpur in Sadar upazila.
Golam Faruk, Feni district traffic inspector, told our local correspondent that the situation has been brought under control overnight with intense efforts from the traffic department.
In Comilla, the tailback stretched from Toll Plaza to Raipur in Daudkandi upazila – a length of about 12 kilometres – a local stringer reports quoting Abul Kalam Azad, officer-in-charge of Daudkandi Highway Police Station.
Meanwhile, the strike called by transport owners in Chittagong was withdrawn last night upon assurance that the impasse on Dhaka-Chittagong highway will be resolved soon. However, the owners have threatened that they will go for strike again if the situation worsens.
