Physicians demonstrating in Chittagong for the withdrawal of cases filed against their colleagues called off their strike today after assurance from the city mayor.

Considering the sufferings of the general people, the leaders of the physicians have decided to withdraw their strike, Dr Mujibul Huq Khan, president of Bangladesh Medical Association, Chittagong told The Daily Star.

The mayor assured us of reaching an acceptable proposition beneficial for both the parties, Dr Khan said.

Striking physicians decided to withdrew from their work stoppage after the BMA leaders met with Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin and journalist leaders at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) this afternoon.

Yesterday, they demanded that a panel comprising specialists be formed to investigate the allegations of negligence brought against the accused doctors.

On the third day of their work stoppage at private clinics, chambers and diagnostic centres yesterday, doctor leaders said they would continue strike until the cases filed are withdrawn.

However, when asked if doctors should remain above the law, they said cases could be filed only after a team of experts found the allegations to be true.
