Authorities today closed the dormitories of Chittagong College for an indefinite period following a clash between the activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir and Bangladesh Chhatra League.

Male students have been asked to vacate their dormitories by 8:00pm today while female ones by 10:00am tomorrow.

The decision came from an urgent meeting of the academic council this afternoon, Principal Prof Jesmin Akhter told our Chittagong correspondent.

All four dormitories which are home to around 400 residential students will remain closed until further notice, the principal added.

At least three students – two BCL men and one Shibir man – were injured in the clash that ensued around 11:00am over placing flower wreaths at the Shaheed Minar on the campus marking the country's 45th Victory Day.

One of the injured was identified as Shaon. He was rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital with head injuries.

The clash ensued while Shibir men attacked BCL activists when the latter were placing wreaths at the Shaheed Minar, claimed Hasmat Ali Rasel, organising secretary of Chittagong city BCL unit.

Shibir activists wielding iron rods and stones attacked the BCL men, triggering the clash, the BCL leader added.

Meanwhile, the two residential halls of Govt. Hazi Mohammad Mohsin College in the port city were also declared shut until further notice.

Principal of the college, Anjan Kumar Nandy told The Daily Star that some two buildings of his college were vandalised in the afternoon.

"The decision was made keeping in mind the security of the students," he said.

Quoting witnesses our local correspondent reported that Chhatra League activists carried out the vandalism at Mohsin college.
