Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today termed resignation of Bangladesh Bank governor as a rare instance of moral strength and courage, according to the PM's press secretary.

Following an unexpected incident at Bangladesh Bank, Governor Atiur Rahman met the prime minister at her office and submitted his resignation letter, Ihsanul Karim said at a press briefing after submission of the resignation letter, Bangla daily Prothom Alo reports.

Saying that the PM had accepted the resignation letter, he told the media: "The prime minister has said that Aitur Rahman's resignation is a courageous move, which will remain a rare instance of moral strength and courage."

Hasina recognised that Atiur contributed a lot to the economic development of the country and particularly mentioned that reserve ballooned and the banking service sector became more dynamic under his leadership, Ihsanul said.

The PM also said steps would be taken against the BB officials whose negligence in duty led to the heist of US$101 million from its account with Federal Reserve Bank of New York, according to the Prothom Alo report.

"Steps will be taken under cyber crimes against official concerned of Bangladesh Bank in connection with the stealing of the reserve money through hacking," Karim quoted the PM as saying.
