3 Mymensingh, Jamalpur war crimes suspects sent to jail

A tribunal in Dhaka sent three war crimes suspects to jail for their alleged involvement in crimes against humanity in Mymensingh and Jamalpur during the country's Liberation War in 1971.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 led by Justice Md Shahinur Islam sent Rezaul Haque alias Akkas Moulvi, Yunus Ali and Omar Faruk to jail after police produced them before the tribunal today, prosecutor Abul Kalam told The Daily Star.

Rezaul, Yunus and Faruk were arrested yesterday from their residences in Mymensingh and Jamalpur districts respectively following arrest warrants issued against them.

After primary probe investigations, the tribunal issued arrest warrants against eight war criminal suspects in Mymensingh and Jamalpur, said the prosecution.

Of the eight war crimes suspects, AKM Yusuf Alam, brother of Yunus, was also arrested yesterday from from Dublar Char in Bagerhat.

But police could not produce Yusuf before the tribunal as the law enforcers were yet to transfer Yusuf to Dhaka from Bagerhat, prosecutor Kalam said.

According to the prosecution, the eight were "involved" with the Razakar and Al-Badr Bahini, two auxiliary forces of the Pakistani occupation army.

The case's investigating officer has already found their "involvement" in crimes including genocide and murders, he informed.
